Tournament (Review)

Once again, while US distributors race around beating each other up and pee their pants to bring audiences the latest lame movie idea, independent studios overseas are putting together some really interesting movies. Though it seems no studio or distributor is willing to take a chance with many of them in the US. It’s a shame really, because there are some really cool movies coming out that I personally would like to see: Black Death, Solomon Kane, and now, The Tournament.

Today we have for you the trailer and several new images for the Scott Mann-directed action movie. Check them out after the jump.

Directed by Scott Mann of Mann Made Films, co-written by Jonathan Frank and Nick Rowntree, The Tournament looks to be a fun, action-packed thriller about a group of thirty top-notch assassins that converge on a different unsuspecting town every seven years to hold a “last man standing” style contest. In this case, all the losers die and the winner receives ten million dollars. While they battle, a group of men with more money to waste the than the US government, hold bets on anything that happens ala Rat Race.

The film stars Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible movies), Ian Somerhalder (Lost), Robert Carlyle (Stargate Universe, 28 Weeks Later), Kelly Hu and Scott Adkins.

Pare che il cast di Vampire Diaries sarà presente il prossimo 14 settembre al PaleyFest. Per ora è confermata la presenza solo di Julie Plec ma viene riportato che si saranno anche membri del cast.

5 Ways The Vampire Diaries May Take a Bite out of Twilight

As the twilight of summer draws near, September is almost upon us and with it comes a new season of Fall television. With the Twilight sequel, New Moon, leading the vampire charge in theatres, several similarly themed projects have piqued the interest of many over the summer, including upcoming CW show, The Vampire Diaries. Another vampire-themed adaptation, you ask? After months of steady Vampire Diaries publicity, the pilot airing at Comic-Con, and leaked information about the potential break-out hit of The CW Fall season, The Vampire Diaries is poised to take a bite out of the popularity of Twilight and New Moon at the right time.

Based on the best-selling novels by L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries follows the story of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who lives in the small town of Mystic Falls. Elena begins an unlikely relationship with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a new student at Elena’s school who remains guarded, which only serves to intrigue Elena even more.

The TV adaptation of The Vampire Diaries has undergone a few storyline changes for the sake of bringing the novel series to life, from the omission and addition of several characters as well as the background stories of Stefan and his vampire brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

With all eyes on the Twilight Saga as fans get set to sink their teeth into New Moon, here are five reasons how we think The Vampire Diaries could take a bite out of Twilight.

Damon è quel genere di vampiro che non vorremmo mai incrociare sulla nostra strada. È un essere demoniaco e malefico che tenta di corrompere suo fratello e di spingerlo a nutrirsi di esseri umani. Damon e Stefan sono più nemici che fratelli fin dalla morte dei loro rispettivi amati che li trasformarono entrambi in vampiri più di 140 anni fa. E quando entrambi si innamorano, questa volta della stessa ragazza, le cose tra di loro peggioreranno…

Vorresti dirci che Damon è un anti-Edward?
Sì, assolutamente, per quel poco che ne so sul carattere di Edward. Se devo dirti un segreto, non ho ancora mai visto Twilight… ma ne ho sentito molto parlare, e tuttavia conosco un po’ la trama. E so che The Vampire Diaries sarà diverso da Twilight. Ciò che abbiamo lanciato finora è molto intenso, molto fisico, e a volte anche brutale…

Se non ci fosse stato Twilight, probabilmente non ci sarebbe stato The Vampire Diaries…
Sì, e ne siamo consapevoli. Twilight è un fenomeno al quale raramente assistiamo, ed non mi lamento perché è grazie ad esso che posso tornare sul piccolo schermo. Quindi, grazie Twilight! [ride]. Prometto che presto recupererò e noleggierò il DVD per vederlo. Comunque, a coloro che pensano che The Vampire Diaries sia una pallida copia di Twilight, voglio ricordare che i libri di L.J. Smith dai quali è tratto lo show, sono stati scritti prima della saga di Stephenie Meyer…

I vampiri di The Vampire Diaries possiedono particolari poteri?
Quando Damon e Stefan si cibano felicemente di piccoli animali come scoiattoli e coniglietti, i loro poteri sono quasi inesistenti, anche se possiedono una forza naturale straordinaria. Ma quando bevono sangue umano, i loro poteri aumentano di dieci volte. Per esempio, il mio personaggio può controllare le menti delle persone. Lui è un maestro della manipolazione mentale. Ma quando non trova ciò che vuole, si arrabbia sul serio…

Riusciremo ad amare il tuo personaggio nonostante il suo lato demoniaco?
Lo spero! Damon è quel genere di persona che è moralmente terrificante, ma che non possiamo aiutare ad amare. In ogni modo, è il mio lavoro riuscire a trasformarlo in qualcuno che non vogliamo scompaia. Oltre alla sua crudeltà, lui possiede anche molto fascino e un gran senso dell’umorismo, un po’ come Spike in Buffy. In ogni modo, per me è una cosa fantastica interpretare questo personaggio. Con questo genere di ruolo, si può essere davvero molto sciolti e non prendersi troppo sul serio. Mi sto davvero divertendo!

The CW ‘plans Vampire Diaries blood drive’

The CW has announced plans to promote The Vampire Diaries with a blood drive, according to reports.

The upcoming series, which centres on two decidedly different bloodsucker brothers and stars Ian Somerhalder, was highlighted by the ‘Starve a Vampire. Donate Blood’ initiative this week.

The five-week marketing campaign will target more than 230 high school and college campuses in the US, while encouraging students to donate blood through the American Red Cross, says TV Guide.

Each locale is to feature series-related refreshments, clips of the show and customised T-shirts for those who participate.

The Vampire Diaries will debut Thursday, September 10 on The CW.

VD ha deciso di promuovere ulteriormente la serie unendosi  a questa iniziativa della donazione del sangue.

La campagna è partita oggi e ha avuto come testimone d’eccezione Ian Somerhalder.

L’iniziativa è intitolata “Starve a vampire. Donate blood.”

L’iniziativa coinvolgerà anche oltre 230 tra scuole superiori e college americani.
