Vampire Diaries: review “TVOvermind”

Posted in Vampire Diaries, recensione, tv series on June 30, 2009 by gabriele

“Jon Lachonis of TVOvermind.com gives us the most detailed review we’ve seen yet, so if you’re avoiding too much in-depth info about the pilot, definitely steer clear.

Overall, it’s an interesting – if not positive – read. You get the sense the reviewer is holding Kevin Williamson (in particular) to a standard and the pilot doesn’t meet his expectations. He’s pretty merciless but (begrudgingly) admits there’s something here he finds intriguing.

Overall, it is the familiarity of The Vampire Diaries plot that sometimes works against it. Seasoned vamp aficionados may find much of the story boringly familiar.”

Vampire Diaries: review “New To TV”

FONTE

After watching a screener for The CW’s new fall drama The Vampire Diaries, I predict the show will be a hit.

Is it following in the footsteps of Twilight and True Blood? Well, as far as timing, yes. It’s the perfect time for this type of show.

But actually, The Vampire Diaries is based on a series of YA books by L.J. Smith which were written before Stephanie Myer’s Twilight books.

And while there are differences and similarities, mostly the reason they are alike is because of the vampire angle. But I think Twilight fans will like The Vampire Diaries because it has a lot of the same elements and you get to watch it EVERY WEEK! What’s better than that?

The Vampire Diaries centers aroufnd two rival sibling vampires who have come home to their hometown of Mystic Falls, Virginia – Stefan (Paul Wesley, Army Wives, Everwood) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder, Tell Me You Love Me, Smallville) for different reasons. Stefan is the good vampire who now refrains from killing humans for blood. Bad vampire Damon is the exact opposite. When Stefan refers to how he kills people, Damon says “that’s a given.”

By the way, in the first two minutes of The Vampire Diaries, people die, setting a tone that something evil is lurking nearby, something this town hasn’t seen in years.

Both vampire siblings are drawn to popular and dark-haired beauty Elena (Nina Dobrev, Degrassi: The Next Generation), who has a striking resemblance to Katherine, who both brothers at one time loved in the 1800s. Yes, our hot vampires are old!

Making the story interesting is the stage that Elena is in her life. A new school year has started, but she’s having a hard time coping, writing in her diary that she will tell everyone that she’s doing okay, that she’s fine. But inside she’s not.

Her parents died from a recent car accident and those of us who have lost a family or loved one know, you can’t set a time limit on loss. You can’t snap your fingers and be over the grief. It happens when it happens. And for Elena, it hasn’t happened yet. This point is made in the pilot when an English teacher reprimands her for not knowing the history lesson, telling her he’s done giving her a break. Another words, he thinks she has had enough time to deal with her grief. But Stefan comes to the rescue and puts the teacher in his place.

As far as the deep attraction the main characters have to each other, it’s totally there. Though in the first episode, you see that with Stefan and Elena. There’s more mystery to the other brother Damon, as he seems to bring all of the bad with him. That doesn’t set well with Stefan who had wanted to start his life over without his past interfering.

The pilot also is creepy at times with a scary crow that follows Elena. At one point she is in the cemetery visiting her parents’ grave writing in her diary. This place at one time was a soothing environment, but now a crow and a thick fog bring danger in the cemetery.

The Vampire Diaries also has great supporting characters that really makes the show worthwhile. There’s Bonnie (Katerina Graham), Elena’s best friend who may be psychic; Caroline (Candice Accola), the blonde beauty who wants what Elena has; Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), Elena’s troubled brother who has turned to drugs and alcohol to fight his grief; Vicki (Kayla Ewell), the kinda slutty girl who Jeremy likes, but she likes Tyler (Michael Trevino), the good-looking jerk; Matt (Zach Roerig), Elena’s jock ex-boyfriend and brother to Vicki; and Zach (Chris William Martin). In addition, there’s Jenna (Sara Canning), aunt to Elena and Jeremy who is in her 20s and attending college while serving as their guardian; and Mr. Tanner (Benjamin Ayres), who pretends to be Stefan’s uncle for school-related purposes, though really Stefan is the uncle.

Vampire Diaries: Recensione + SPOILER!

Posted in Vampire Diaries, recensione, spoilers, tv series on June 26, 2009 by gabriele

tvd11AVVISO SPOILER!

Ecco la recensione del primo episodio fatta da Hollywood Crush:

SPOILER
I’m not sure it’s a good idea to read all five books in a series just before watching the pilot for their small-screen adaptation. It kind of leaves you feeling a bit too immersed in a fictional world. And it tends to encourage the kind of silly “That’s not how it happens in the book!” exclamations you’d expect coming from our fanboy brethren over at Splash Page (no offense, guys).

But last night I sacrificed myself for you, dear readers, and watched the first episode of the CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” based on the novels by L.J. Smith (which I discussed in this week’s Book Report).

The skeletal plot of the show (which premieres Thursday, September 10 at 8 pm ET) seems much the same as the book: It’s the first day of Elena Gilbert’s senior year, and she’s worried that everyone will still think of her as the girl whose parents died. But her attention is soon diverted by the hot new kid in school, Stefan Salvatore, who seems to have an amazing ability to persuade grownups and sneak up behind people. Of course, he’s actually a vampire whose masochism extends beyond just denying himself human blood, which he doesn’t necessarily have to kill to drink — he wants to go high school. (Really, if all he wanted to do was live like a human, why not pretend to be one who’s already graduated?)

“Dawson’s Creek”/ “I Know What You Did Last Summer” mastermind Kevin Williamson’s signature blend of clever teenage dialogue and creepy, watcher-in-the-woods tension is present from the start. To sustain viewers throughout a season, he seems to know that for every suspenseful scene in the dark fog, you need a minute of light-hearted banter in the local hangout accompanied by a hip, upbeat soundtrack.

There are, of course, a couple of fundamental differences from the books, not just the fact that Elena (Nina Dobrev) has dark eyes and hair (she’s a blue-eyed blond in the book) and she lives in Mystic Falls, not Fell’s Church. Instead of hailing from Renaissance Italy, Stefan (Paul Wesley, above left) appears to be from Civil War-era Mystic Falls (are we veering into “True Blood” territory now?). But the change makes sense: If they didn’t cast an Italian, it’d be annoying to hear an actor’s fake Italian accent throughout the show. In the book, Elena has a 4-year-old little sister, Margaret, who’s very peripheral to the story. For the show, she has a far more interesting teenage little brother, Jeremy, who has turned to drinking and drugs to deal with his grief.

I’d say I was upset that one of Elena’s best friends in the book, Meredith, is completely absent from this first episode, but fan site Vampire-Diaries.net has word from producers Williamson and Julie Plec that she’ll show up eventually. Psychic friend Bonnie, meanwhile, is African-American instead of a redheaded Druid descendant, which hardly matters as long as she still knows how to channel spirits.

After a bit of high school drama, we finally get to meet Stefan’s brother, Damon. Ian Somerhalder is every bit as smoldering and mischievous as his character in the books, though he hardly gets to do much in the first episode, other than tease him about how much Elena looks like Stefan’s long-lost love Katherine. We also learn that Stefan lives with a completely new character, a human relative named Zach — whose irritating admonition to Stefan when the newspaper starts reporting mysterious animal attacks makes him my least favorite character so far. Where’s kooky boardinghouse matron Mrs. Flowers when you need her?

Have you read “The Vampire Diaries”? Do you think these changes from the book will bother you? Sound off below!
